Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy

The slit lamp is the microscope at the center of every eye examination. It illuminates the eye in a thin sheet of light, letting the doctor examine each structure layer by layer.

What it examines

• Cornea and conjunctiva — dry eye, infections, abrasions, and foreign bodies.
• Lens — cataract graded by type and severity.
• Retina and optic nerve — examined in detail with an additional lens.

Every exam lane in our eye department is equipped with one, which is why an eye complaint can usually be diagnosed the day you come in.
